Continued Medicaid Eligibility (Section 1619(B))

One of the biggest concerns SSI beneficiaries have about going to work is the possibility of losing Medicaid coverage. Section 1619(b) of the Social Security Act provides some protection for these beneficiaries. To qualify for continuing Medicaid coverage, a person must:

Have been eligible for an SSI cash payment for at least 1 month;
Still meet the disability requirement; and
Still meet all other non-disability SSI requirements; and
Need Medicaid benefits to continue to work; and
Have gross earnings that are insufficient to replace SSI, Medicaid and publicly funded attendant care services.

Overview of Self-Review Requirements

Indicator 13 of the State Performance Plan (SPP) requires the State to annually report the percentage of youth aged 15 and above with IEPs that include coordinated, measurable annual IEP goals and transition services that will reasonably enable the student to meet measurable post-secondary goals.

The State will report this information based on data from a representative sample of school districts throughout the State. SED has chosen to collect these data through a self-review monitoring process. Beginning with the 2005-06 school year, one-sixth of the school districts in the State must complete and report the results from the “Self-Review Monitoring Protocol: Secondary Transition IEP Review for Students with Disabilities.”

Forest Project Summer Collaborative

The Forest Project Summer Collaborative empowers teenagers as citizens of an urban environment, and helps them pursue academic and personal fulfillment. This program uses Bronx natural areas and green spaces for ecological study and job training. Earning wages from Wave Hill and college credits from CUNY's Lehman College, basic forest restoration is taught in the greater context of an urban ecosystem, where woodland management connects directly with air and water quality, wildlife habitat, and biodiversity.

Three levels of internships are offered based on experience and high school grade completed, encouraging teenagers to grow at Wave Hill by returning each summer for new and increasingly challenging experiences.

Upward Bound

NYU's Upward Bound program annually serves a target population of fifty low-income economically disadvantaged The New York City Department of Education high school students with disabilities who have the potential to be the first college graduates in their families. In addition, students should demonstrate a need for academic support.

The program is unique in that it is nonresidential. Activities are held at NYU, students attend activities on Saturdays and after school at either their target school or the program site. During the summer, they attend a full-time six-week program Monday through Friday which is designed to further aid in the successful transition to postsecondary environments.

Who is eligible for a Certificate of Relief?

By law, you are eligible for a Certificate of Relief if you have not been convicted of more than one felony. For this purpose, two or more felony convictions stemming from the same indictment count as one felony. Two or more convictions stemming from two or more separate indictments filed in the same court, prior to conviction under any of them, also count as one felony.

Who is eligible for a a Certificate of Good Conduct?

In contrast to the Certificate of Relief, you are eligible for the Certificate of Good Conduct even if you have been convicted of more than one felony. You do not become eligible for a Certificate of Good Conduct, however, until a minimum period of time has elapsed from the date of your unrevoked release from custody by parole or from the date your sentence ended.

This course satisfies the Health Code requirement that supervisors of food service establishments and non-retail food service establishments be certified as having completed a course in food protection. The course is also available in a classroom setting.

The course is free and is now offered in Spanish, Chinese and English. The online course is designed for individuals with busy schedules to study at their convenience. The course is divided into fifteen sections, each of which takes about an hour to complete. A short quiz is at the end of each section. This must be successfully completed before the next section is accessible.

An in-house final examination is scheduled at the end of the course.

Participants who complete this course and are successful at the final examination are issued certificates.
